The opening lead and dummy have been tabled, and declarer has called for a card from the open hand; so, before you play single card, you have a considerable amount of information. You can assess the bidding, try to place the missing cards, and anticipate declarer's approach. You will also want to assess who is in charge of the proceedings: typically, whether you should be giving information to partner or whether you should expect it from him--most commonly distribution, encouragement or discouragement, or suit preference.
